Scuba Diving And Snorkeling Excursions
Puerto Rico’s tropical waters are a diver’s
paradise. The average ocean temperature is 81ºF and
underwater visibility averages from 60 to 75 feet near the
beach. Offshore it is easily 100 feet or more! While experienced
divers may prefer boat diving, there are countless sites
– especially on the west coast from Cabo Rojo to Aguadilla
– for equally impressive shore diving.
The most exciting dives are made at:
- "La Pared" (The Wall)- a coral reef
20 miles long running parallel to the coast extending
from Cabo Rojo to Guánica .
- near Desecheo Island off Rincón,
about 30 minutes from Cabo Rojo
- off Mona Island, 50 miles west of Cabo Rojo
Wherever you go underwater you are likely to find tropical
flora and fauna that easily eclipse the most beautiful
aquarium you have ever seen. Dive Cabo Rojo, Puerto
Rico and you may get “up close and personal”
with sea horses that look like chess set knights, unusual
arrow crabs, colorful parrot fish, and octopus, among the
endless schools of sergeant majors and other colorful reef
fish.

Mona Island (Isla de Mona) Excursions
Place: Isla de Mona, 45 miles west of
Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico
La Isla de Mona is a small island located 45 miles west
of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. It is considered to be the
Galápagos of the Caribbean. It is an excellent
place for camping, fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling.
It requires permission for camping.
The island has been declared a national refuge for wild
life, which includes several species endemic to the island.
Many years ago, guano, a natural fertilizer, was collected
from deposits in the island. Laborers who stayed on the
island for that purpose introduced several animal species,
including goats, pigs and cats. Some of these animals were
left behind by the laborers and they have thrived on the
island, threatening some of the native species like the
iguana, the Mona boa, and several species of sea turtles
that use the island as breeding grounds.

Sea Fishing Excursions
Place: Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico
Fishing in Puerto Rico takes many forms, the most dramatic
of which is deep-sea fishing for billfish. The north side
of the island is known as “Blue Marlin Alley”
because of the large number of migrating fish that pass
near its shores, especially in the summer. Puerto Rico is
home to the International Billfish Tournament and specimens
in excess of 1,000 pounds have been recorded.
The fishing is good year round, however Winter, which runs
roughly from October to early March, is the best overall
season for dolphin, dorado, mahi-mahi, wahoo, white marlin,
yellow fin tuna and an occasional sailfish. Blue marlin
are easy to catch in the summer, but are always returned
to the sea.
Charters are available from harbors in Mayaguez (20
minutes from Cabo Rojo), and since deep water is
so close to Puerto Rico’s shores, fishing usually
commences within a half hour of leaving port. Boats range
in size from 32’ to 50’ with an average capacity
of six passengers, with four fishing. Deep-sea charters
are for either a half-day or full day, including the services
of a captain and a mate, all fishing equipment, and ice
and refreshments.
It’s a good idea to reserve your deep sea fishing
adventure directly with the charter operator as far in advance
of your trip as possible. The Puerto Rico Sports Fishing
Association, the official record keeper for the island,
is a good source of current information. (787-752-7740 /
