There is no place on earth quite like a volcanic island in the tropics, and there is no island in the tropical Caribbean quite like Puerto Rico. The geography of the island is unique. Take a rectangular piece of paper, crumple it up, smooth out the edges and you have a rough facsimile of it. The topography ranges from palm-lined beaches to rugged, steep mountains, gently rolling hills and desert-like areas.

The island’s north coast faces the blue Atlantic, and has areas of rough surf, along with several sheltered beaches ideal for water sports. This region is very green and lush.

It’s Caribbean side, the southern coast, is flat and relatively dry, with several offshore cays and islets. Savannah – like conditions are prevalent, and an assortment of dry forest settings are found.

While visiting Cabo Rojo and neighboring towns in Puerto Rico you can enjoy:

  • spectacular beaches
  • water sports
  • scuba diving and snorkeling excursions
  • the Bioluminescent Bay
  • bird watching
  • humpback whales watching
  • hiking
  • excursions to La Isla de Mona: Galápagos of the Caribbean
  • and many other natural wonders.

See below some of the places to visit and things to do:

Bioluminescent Bay

Place: La Parguera, Lajas, Puerto Rico

Nature lovers will never let go the incredible and rare opportunity to visit a tropical bioluminescent bay.

Visiting La Parguera Bioluminescent Bay is great for a trip on a moonless night. Go to La Parguera and take a boat with a cristal bottom at the dock for an exciting bioluminescent bay trip (dinoflagellate watching). Due to their delicate ecology, bioluminescent bays are rare in the world!

Humpback Whales Watching

Place: Rincón, Puerto Rico

Graceful and magnificent, humpback whales inspire awe in young and old alike. These marine mammals travel great distances to take advantage of the best breeding grounds and feeding spots. They can be observed from The Lighthouse of Rincón, Puerto Rico during the months of December until March.

These gentle giants are famous for their singing abilities -- belting out seductive ballads to attract mates or to challenge other would-be suitors. But they also have other talents. Their unique hunting skill, called bubblenet feeding, involves a group of humpbacks working together to capture schools of herring. Each whale has a particular role in the process: One whale swims in a circle while blowing bubbles under a school of herring. When the bubbles rise, the school of herring can not escape and form into a tight ball in the center. Other whales vocalize -- grunting or screaming -- to scare the herring to the surface. The whales then rise with their mouths wide open to capture large amounts of fish.

Mona Island (Isla de Mona) Excursions

Place: Isla de Mona, 45 miles west of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico

La Isla de Mona is a small island located 45 miles west of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. It is considered to be the Galápagos of the Caribbean.

It is an excellent place for:

  • camping
  • fishing
  • scuba diving and snorkeling

It requires permission for camping.

The island has been declared a national refuge for wild life, which includes several species endemic to the island. Many years ago, guano, a natural fertilizer, was collected from deposits in the island. Laborers who stayed on the island for that purpose introduced several animal species, including goats, pigs and cats. Some of these animals were left behind by the laborers and they have thrived on the island, threatening some of the native species like the iguana, the Mona boa, and several species of sea turtles that use the island as breeding grounds.
